Onam Sadya special Parippu

For those who do not know, Onam festival is celebrated in Kerala. It is celebrated for 10 days for rice harvest. Onam sadya is a feast served on plantain leaves and consists of nine courses. Parippu is one of them. Parippu is made of moong dal and coconut. It is served with rice and ghee. Soul satisfying I must say!

Let's get down to the process of making it.
Ingredients:

Moong dal- 1/3 cup
Water- 1 cup
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp

For the paste:

Fresh coconut- 1/3 cup
Green chilies- 2
Onion- 1, small

For tempering:

Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds- 1/4 tsp
Onion slices- few
Dry red chili- 1, cut in half
Curry leaves- 8 to 10

Method:
  1. Wash moong dal and add to a pressure pan.
  2. Add water and turmeric powder.
  3. Close the lid and cook for 6- 7 whistles.
  4. When the pressure is gone, open the lid and mash the dal.
  5. In a mixi jar, add coconut, green chilies, onion, a little water and make a fine paste.
  6. Add this paste to the moong dal.
  7. Add salt, some water and cook on low flame for 10 minutes.
  8. Add all the tempering ingredients, saute and add the dal.
  9. Switch off the flame and serve hot.
  • You can add spice according to your taste, but generally it is mildly spiced.
  • The curry has to be thick and not runny.
